Physiotherapy is the rehabilitation of persons with physical disability using physical means to normal or to near normal.
Susan Akori, the president of the Uganda Association of physiotherapy says, ‘’we use physical means like water in form of hydrotherapy for rehabilitation, ice for reduction of pain, heat in two types deep heat and superficial heat in form of infra-radiation, work therapy, massage which scientifically means soft tissue manipulation and physical exercises.”
Physiotherapy is broad like physiotherapy in gynecology about women’s health especially pregnant mothers who are supposed to go through antenatal physiotherapy and post antenatal physiotherapy.
Antenatal physiotherapy focuses on a pregnant woman and what is happening to her body during this period where the physiotherapist tries to prepare the mother for delivery. Here the expecting mother is given relaxation exercises that releases the ligaments around the pelvic so that by the time the mother is going to give birth the ligaments are loose, she is also given deep breathing exercises so that if it’s time for labor she is able to breath in a more relaxed way.
Mothers whose legs get swollen during pregnancy especially due to fluid collection are given exercises of the legs and feet to encourage good circulation of blood.

Post antenatal physiotherapy focuses on mothers after giving birth; this is to relieve the back pain that the mother gets during pregnancy since her body enlarges due to the hormones produced during pregnancy. This therapy helps to strengthen the pelvic muscles that were stretched during pregnancy and to put the mother’s body back to shape. Mothers that become parallelized after birth especially during the pushing process and are unable to walk are rehabilitated by strengthening the legs.

How it’s done.
Besides the medication that is given during the Physiotherapy treatment the patients are taken through physic treatment that involves movement of the body regularly. For example patients with back pain during the exercise treatment are told to lie on their back and move their legs in the way they refer to ‘’ridding the bicycle’’, others are told to carry their legs while standing as they up their arms up straight. This is aimed at relieving the pain on the back.
Who needs physiotherapy?
People with neuro-musclo skeletal disorders need physiotherapy, where neuro means nerves, like people suffering from stroke, injection neuritis, babies who were damaged at birth by their mothers are not able to walk, children that also delay to walk all need this therapy to correct them as others walk after the treatment.
Children with delayed milestone. These include children that delay to walk depending on the normal age they are to start walking. The children are taken through regular physical exercises that enable them walk and for some enable them to move while on support.
People that also have back strain or joint pain also need the physiotherapy; those that have accidents like motor accidents or domestic falls at home or work also need the physiotherapy since their spinal cord or joint are hurt or affected in the accident.

What causes body strains?
Poor sitting posture can cause back pain since the muscles are affected that in turn cause pain.
The type of chairs we use in that the chairs that do not support the back to be upright cause dislocation that damages the spinal cord.
Heavy weight of a person can cause strains this mostly happens around the pivot cause the waist is the first part of the body that receives the weight before transferring it to the other part of the body so if the weight is too much the pivot gets over strained hence increasing pain on the back.
Accidents like road accidents or domestic falls at home or work can cause strain of the back or joint since in that process one gets hurt.
Why are strains common among children?
Children in school that carry heavy bags regularly are prone to getting these pains especially in the back.
Children that were damaged by their mothers during birth in the future also end being unable to work.
Children that may have been damaged by injection which is referred to as injection neuritis due to being put in the wrong place, these children end up unable to walk.
Akori urges people that always have desk work to at least stretch regularly within their working period and rather have meals outside office and take regular walks around the office.
She also recommends office oriented people to sit on upright chairs or put a pillow on back of their chairs so as to maintain a straight posture. ‘’If you do work that involves over sitting you should get a chair that puts your body at an angel of 90% so as to avoid straining your back especially the pivot area’’, she added.
