Kato aims at restoring a good relationship within the Dental School

IT is a hot afternoon when your writer arrives at the Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Management Sciences. A call from Kato Allan, the president of the Dental Students Association (an outfit for training dentists in Uganda) beckons to the Dental school, the venue for this interview. It’s quiet and very much deserted. “Most of our classes are in the morning and afternoon hours and besides this is a time for internship so most of the students have gone for practices,” he explains. We soon get on with the interview.

“I was elected to be the president of the Association in April this year and I am the 47th president of the Dental Students Association,” begins, soon quipping that “It was a tough race but I managed to emerge the winner. We were selected then vetted and it was after that I became the overall winner.”

Allan first served as the chief fresher when he joined the Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Managemnet Sciences. Here he was in charge of bridging the gap between the new student’s body and the school administration. His next assignment had a correlation to the first albeit broader. “I later went to the position of publicity where I was in charge of publicizing and creating awareness of the association within the institution and to the general public.”

Earlier life…
Kato is a born of 1996 in Kayunga District (eastern Uganda) and is a Musoga by tribe. He attended Ndejje View Primary school, joining St. Lawrence SSS Namugongo for O Level and completing his A-level at St. Peter’s SSS Nsambya.

“While I was still in Secondary school, I found sciences abit hard but I kept it in mind that I should pursue it because since most of the people in my family had done it I also knew I would make it. My father was in the medical department, particularly he was a veterinary Doctor and other relatives were doctors.”

He elaborates that “I chose the course because I was a culprit of bad teeth. I was always taken to Mengo Hospital to fix my teeth so it is from then I [developed] the love to do Dentistry because I wanted to get rib of the epidemic and let people know how it is important to keep the teeth healthy,” adding “I became inquisitive and I started asking why, so I decided to choose Dentisty since I knew I would do it well.”

His Advice…
Kato has a few recommendations of his own;

Always ensure to brush well, it is not a matter of brushing but it is important for people to brush thoroughly to avoid getting teeth complications.

Kato also says people should avoid intake of refined sugars especially in large quantities.

Brush atleast twice a day, in the morning after breakfast and at night before sleeping.

Always go for dental check ups at least twice in a year or after six months and endeavor to get knowledge about dental.

Goals of the Association…

As an Association, our utmost target for this year is to build a good relationship between the students of the Institute and the Dentistry community. Here we shall carry out activities that shall bond them.

We are looking forward to making a website as an association which is set to spear head the activities of the association and above all to sell the Dental school to the public and make more awareness proposals to the public about Dental.

We are also looking forward to organizing a conference and a syposuim at the School clinic and Dental Autorium in Mualgo. Here we shall invite other medical students, companies to show case new technologies .
This is aimed at giving back to the community at a zero cost, where we shall carry out free medical services, dental services, counselling and guidance as well as dental care.

We are also looking at organizing a dental run to make more awareness of Oral Dental since a few people know about it. This is cancer of the mouth, that may come about by usual things around us that may be ignored like alcoholism, smoking and nut chewing. We basically write proposals to funders who come in to give a hand.

We are organizing a Dental Students Association open tournament in August to bond the gap between the students and the community. There shall be several games to participate in like football, volley ball and other indoor games.
