Work uniforms for Uganda’s public nurses and midwives

The first nursing uniforms may have been an adoption of the Nuns’ dress code, since nuns took care of many of the sick or injured. According to Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, the traditional nurses uniform consists — a dress, a pinafore apron, and a cap. This largely remains the standard style of dress code, for nurses and midwives, in Uganda’s public health system. Male health personnel have a different uniform though.

The early 1970’s saw the standard nurse’s uniform — dress, pinafore apron and cap — get replaced by gender neutral scrub uniforms, that until then were common place in operating rooms. This has mostly held in Europe and America with Uganda’s public health system yet to adopt the scrub uniform. Some private hospitals have it as their standard work uniform for nurses and midiwives.

The fashions of uniforms worn by nurses and midwives at work is a matter left to individual entities that employ them, say hospitals. It therefore follows that different governments decide what is considered work uniform for the respective health human resource cadres they employ including public nurses and midwives to say the least. This may be to exhibit a professional image, as well as allow for patients or clients to easily identify the different health personnel with ease.

Below is the accepted dress code for nurses and midwives in Ugandas public health facilities per the country’s health ministry.
