Oral 3rd generationn broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibacterial

Dosage forms
Tablets: 200mg

– Urethral discharge syndrome (male)
– Abdominal vaginal discharge syndrome
– Lower abdominal pain syndrome (female)
– Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
– Upper and lower respiratory tract infections

Dose and duration
– Urethral discharge syndrome, abnormal vaginal discharge syndrome
•adult: 400mg as a single dose
– Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
•adult and child over 10yrs: 200-400mg daily in 1-2 divided doses for 7days
•child 5-10yrs: 200mg once daily for 5-7days
•child 1-4yrs: 100mg once daily for 5-7days
– Lower abdominal pain syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
•adult: 400mg daily in 1-2 divided doses for 5-10days

Note: In renal failure with creatinine clearance <20ml/min, do not exceed 200mg daily Contra-indications
– Hyper-sensitivity to cephalosporins

– Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort
– Headache
– Stevens-johnson syndrome, allergic reaction, anaphylaxiz

– Warfarin (possibly anticoagulant effect)

– Can be used

– Can be used

– Give with caution in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity due to likelihood of cross-sensitivity
– In patients with of cephalosporin induced haemolytic anaemia, avoid re-administration
– Discontinue cefixime incase of acute renal failure or tubulointerstitial nephritis occurs
– Reduce dose in moderate to severe renal impairment
