Row Erupts in Lyantonde Over Shortage of Doctors

Lyantonde — Lyantonde District speaker Ephraim Kamugisha has tasked the district health committee to explain why doctors posted to the district are abandoning their work stations for greener pastures.

According to Mr Kamugisha, the district hospital, which is supposed to have nine doctors, currently has only one doctor, who attends to more than 700 outpatients daily.

“Someone must explain this worrying trend in our district. A few existing medical workers are overstretched and they get no extra allowances,” he said in an interview with Daily Monitor on Wednesday

When contacted, Ms Cissy Kiizza, the district health officer, declined to speak about the matter, referring this reporter to the Lyantonde hospital administrator, Mr Paul Male Kyateeka. Mr Kyateeka explained that although some doctors left for further studies, arrangements have been made to fill the vacant posts.

LC5 boss blamed

However, some health workers at the hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, blamed the district chairperson, Mr Fred Muhangi, who is also the district secretary for health, for playing a big role in forcing doctors to leave.

“Muhangi can promote whoever pleases him without considering qualifications and experience one has. A medic can be promoted immediately after finishing university, leaving out senior doctors who have served for decades,” said a female nurse at the hospital.

But the district chairperson denied the allegations, saying he intervenes in hospital matters only when health workers are absconding from duty.

“I am not the one who recruits doctors. As a political head, I only intervene when things are not going well; don’t expect me to sit and watch when health workers are neglecting their duties,” Mr Muhangi said.
